The consensus so far is meetings every 3 weeks on Saturdays. The time of day and location may change for future meetings; we will discuss this at the April 17th meeting.

One of Canada’s most exciting and innovative new flamenco companies, Montréal’s La Otra Orilla, comprised of dancer Myriam Allard, and singer Hedi ‘El Moro’ Graja, along with long-time collaborator, guitarist Kraig Adams will take to the stage in Alberta for three nights only to present a repertoire of traditional flamenco work refined and defined by years of training and performance in Spain and Canada.

Unique in their artistic approach, La Otra Orilla’s impressive CV includes invitations to present at Montreal’s Tangente in 2008, and Toronto’s Danceworks, and Montreal’s Danse Danse in 2010. Along with this, Allard, who has been hailed by the Dance Current as ‘unique among flamenco dancers’ has danced professionally with renowned new generation flamenco dance artist, Israel Galván.

Joining La Otra Orilla and Kraig Adams will be dancer Rosanna Terracciano, recent co-curator of Cross Over for Fluid Movement Arts Festival, and an upcoming part of Dancers’ Studio West season of dance.

The Telematic Flamenco Guide has reappeared after a period of absence and is worth a re-post. The Guide, produced by Tourismo Andaluz in collaboration with the Biennial Flamenco Exhibition, is a good starting point for information about Flamenco history and forms (palos). The site also includes audio samples by geographic region.

Note: the site's feature to use the alphabetical list by clicking on the first letter of the song form (at the top of the page) often doesn't work properly. E.g. if there are no results for forms that start with "T" (there should be listings for Tangos, Taranta, Tientos, etc.), go back to the beginning of the list and use the forward arrows (">>") to scroll through the pages.

Dancer Esperanza Linares, guitarist Tosh Hayashi, singer Marni Benavides, and palmista Elysia perform a new piece in "Vistas" at the Alberta Dance Association's feats festival of dance.

"Vistas" takes place July 2 @ 8 pm at the Westbury Theatre, TransAlta Arts Barns and will also include new works from Alberta choreographers in tap, lyrical, and contemporary dance. Palmas provide the rhythmic backbone for Flamenco dance, guitar, and song. Solid palmas are an art, requiring an understanding of song forms, the ability to keep straight time, and musical sensitivity.

"When you’re a palmero/palmista you’re the human metronome and the support for the whole ensemble---you’re an anchor and you’re the strong roots of a tree, even though your role may seem trivial to the unknowing eye." Ritmo – the Spanish word for rhythm - is a thrilling night of the sights and sounds of Spain right here in Calgary. Anke Herrmann, who relocated to Granada to become a dressmaker for Flamenco artists, provides a unique and reasonably-priced custom sewing pattern service. "feats celebrates dance from Alberta and Canada. The festival aims to promote dance in a summer celebration with the dance community and general public. We are looking for new dance projects to be considered for the 2009 festival that bring diverse backgrounds and inspired originality. feats welcomes dance and movement based performance from wide variety of interests (traditional/folk, contemporary, mixed-media, inter-arts, burlesque/vaudeville and circus arts)."

Flamenco in Canada call for submissions

Halifax's Flamenco In Canada festival has put out a call for submissions of photos and stories that illustrate the impact of Flamenco culture on Canada. Accepted submissions will be part of an exhibition at Halifax's Pier 21, September 27 - October 6, 2008. This is a great opportunity for local flamencos to share their experiences demonstrating how the art form has influenced Canadian culture.

Send high resolution scans or digital photos along with stories (make sure you have permission!) to kreinhardt@pier21.ca no later than September 5th.

El Sonido del Silencio" is an encounter between flamenco's past and present; where the old and the new come together in one performance to express a timeless sense of music and movement.

Annette Morcos and Peña Bulería in collaboration with Flamenco.ca are proud to present El Sonido del Silencio in Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton; a production featuring artists from Sevilla including Manuel Alejandro Montero (Guitar), Cristina Hall (Dancer), David de Alcala (Singer).
