Calgary International Flamenco Festival - September 23– 29, 2012

World-class performers ignite the 2nd annual Calgary International Flamenco Festival from September 23– 29, 2012.

A week-long celebration of flamenco music, dance, passionate expression and innovative performances – this is the flamenco event of the year. Bringing together top Spanish artists with Canadian performers, the festival features workshops and concert events including the breathtaking dancer from Madrid, Manuel Liñan on September 28th 8 pm, at the University Theatre.

Also coming from Spain are Guitarist Liron Man and Elena Morales, featured in “Concierto Flamenco” on Monday September 24th. Highlights include guest Canadian dancer Maria Regnier and fusion of the unique melodic percussion instrument: the Hang Drum. In the “Flamenco Showcase” on Saturday September 29th, many talents from around the province unite in a dynamic collaborative performance at the popular downtown venue, The Auburn.

Headlining the festival is the aforementioned flamenco company, Manuel Liñan with singer Juan Debel and guitarist Victor “El Tomate.” Manuel has performed in many of the major Flamenco Festivals in the world (Albuquerque, New York, Milan) and is one of the most outstanding and accoladed flamenco dancers of today (Best Interpretation of Male Dance and Choreography, Performing Arts MAX awards, 2009).

"Manuel Liñan is the bomb that exploded last year: more than just a good dancer. Gather the instinct, sensitivity and character of the best flamenco - young, creative and different, with eloquent silences and landslides magic." (Julia Martin, The World, 2005).
